One State Over Client
These homeowners loathed their existing kitchen with its tight bottleneck spaces and constant traffic jams whenever more than three people were in the space at once but had put off remodeling until after their kiddo’s college educations were prioritized. Now that they were finally ready to tackle renovating the narrow kitchen space, and with the home being two-stories and having a finished basement directly below, a staircase backing directly onto the primary kitchen wall, and multiple windows and headers to work around, we knew designing a new layout would have its challenges. Despite the narrow footprint, the homeowners really were wanting to have some kind of an island complete with seating for the entire family, and better traffic flow. The key to eliminating the main bottleneck area was relocating the full-depth refrigerator and eliminating the peninsula cabinets… We also needed to find a more suitable location for the range/oven since it was located directly beside the doorway to the dining room with minimal countertop space to truly function well. The newly designed space allowed us to stay on budget by leaving the sink and plumbing in its existing footprint under the main window overlooking the backyard. We also designed a custom wall of storage and cabinets around the relocated fridge which opened the main traffic area up dramatically and shifted the range to the external wall where we also designed a custom bank of cabinets to work around a crucial structural beam. With the range and new vent-oven relocated, we also converted a previous shallow storage pantry into a stunning beverage serving area and replaced the built-in seating table/bench area with a functional island space with a dedicated task area as well as seating for 5 on 3 sides of the island.
